“As With All Things Irish: It Takes A Village”*

A Very Special Thanks to the Murphys, the Brosnans, and the Delanceys

The picture of the Sacred Heart on the set of The Seafarer is specified in the script by the playwright-- not only that it is a part of the setting, but also that it probably has been in that home for many years. It is a fairly common element of an Irish Catholic home.

Although it is a familiar image to us who were reared in the Catholic Church, the style and detail of the picture has changed somewhat in recent years, particularly in the US. Thus, it was difficult to find both the look of the older image and the more or less standard way it is framed, displayed, and lighted in an Irish home. Enter my dear friend and co-founder of BSB, Cathy Murphy-Barron.

Now living in New Jersey, Cathy grew up in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, and has long been my first resource on all things Irish. So when I enlisted her help and she wasn't able to find an authentic image online, we went where we've gone before-- to the Murphy family in Tralee.

Martin and Margaret Murphy (Cathy's parents) contacted Margaret's sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ellen and Paddy Brosnan (also of Tralee), who have the Sacred Heart picture in their home. Mary Ellen has had the picture for 50 years! Neighbor Maureen Delancey enlisted her son Joseph to take numerous digital photos (from all angles) of it, and then Martin emailed the photos to me. All this only took about 24 hours.

Technology is good, but these delightful people are even better-- on behalf of myself and the Theatre, yet again, a thousand thanks. Wish I were there.

A Message from the Artistic Director:

Welcome back, friends of Brigit; BSB is alive, well, and mounting its 19th classic season.

We are in between permanent locations and think it wise to take our time in deciding on a permanent space.  Therefore, this season, each production will take place at a different venue.

In selecting these venues, we are looking for spaces that will complement each production. For example, Tartuffe will be enhanced by the beauty and classical environment of the Joslyn Castle, and the festive receptions after each performance will foster a uniquely warm holiday experience.

Brigit is finalizing locations for the rest of the season titles.  You will note that the months for each show have been announced, but specific dates are being settled on because these will be related to production locations. When each venue is confirmed, announcements will be made in three ways: posts here on our website at bsbtheatre.com, direct email to those on our email list, and via US Post mailing.  We urge patrons to check our website  CALENDAR for updates and utilize the CONTACT link in order to be added to our email list.

Moliere, McPherson, Beckett, Synge, and Chaucer: good company in another season of fine, affecting drama.  Please join us.

Best Regards,
